The Mississippi River Is Drying Up

The worst drought in more than 50 years is having a devastating impact on the Mississippi River. The Mississippi has become very thin and very narrow, and if it keeps on dropping there is a very real possibility that all river traffic could get shut down. And considering the fact that approximately 60 percent of our grain, 22 percent of our oil and natural gas, and and one-fifth of our coal travel down the Mississippi River, that would be absolutely crippling for our economy. It has been estimated that if all Mississippi River traffic was stopped that it would cost the U.S. economy 300 million dollars a day. So far most of the media coverage of this historic drought has focused on the impact that it is having on farmers and ranchers, but the health of the Mississippi River is also absolutely crucial to the economic success of this nation, and right now the Mississippi is in incredibly bad shape. In some areas the river is already 20 feet below normal and the water is expected to continue to drop. If we have another 12 months of weather ahead of us similar to what we have seen over the last 12 months then the mighty Mississippi is going to be a complete and total disaster zone by this time next year.
Most Americans simply do not understand how vitally important the Mississippi River is to all of us. If the Mississippi River continues drying up to the point where commercial travel is no longer possible, it would be an absolutely devastating blow to the U.S. economy.
Unfortunately, vast stretches of the Mississippi are already dangerously low. The following is an excerpt from a transcript of a CNN report that aired on August 14th….
You might think this is some kind of desert just outside of Memphis. It’s not. I’m actually standing on the exposed bottom of the Mississippi River. That’s how dramatic the drought impact is being felt here. Hard to believe, a year ago we were talking about record flooding. Now, they are worried about a new kind of record: a record low. The river was three miles wide here, it’s now down to three tenths of a mile. And that’s causing all kinds of problems. There are some benefits, I mean, take a look over here: new beach front. In fact, some quip that now the Mississippi River has more beaches than the entire state of Florida, which would be funny if it didn’t have an impact on trade.
A lot of stuff we use goes up and down the Mississippi River. We are talking steel, coal, ore, grain. The problem is now a lot of those barges have had to lighten their loads, and even doing that, they are still running aground. There is a real fear that there could be a possibility of closing the Mississippi River. If that happens, well, all that product that used to be carried cheaply by barge is now going to be carried more expensively by truck or train. And guess who is going to pay for all of that.

It really is amazing that last year we were talking about historic flooding along the Mississippi and this year we are talking about the Mississippi possibly drying up.
As I mentioned earlier, there are some areas along the river that are already 20 feet below normal levels. The following is from a recent article posted on inquisitr.com….
Just outside of Memphis the river is 13 feet below normal depth while the National Weather Service says Vicksburg, Mississippi is 20 feet below normal levels. Overall the Mississippi is 13 feet below normal averages for this time of year.
The drying up river is forcing barge, tugboat and towboat operators to navigate narrower and more shallow spots in the river, slowing their speeds as they pass dangerously close to one another. In some parts of the Mississippi the river is so narrow that one-way traffic is being utilized.
A lot of barges have been forced to go with greatly reduced loads so that they will sit higher in the river, and other commercial craft have been forced to stop operating completely.
For example, the Mississippi has dropped so low at this point that the famous American Queen Steamboat can no longer safely navigate the river.
Down south, the Mississippi River has gotten so low that saltwater is actually starting to move upriver. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is fighting hard to keep that contained.
Other waterways in the middle part of the country are in even worse shape.
For example, a 100 mile stretch of the Platte River has already dried up. Millions of fish are dying as rivers and streams all over the country continue to get shallower and warmer as a result of the ongoing drought.
The last time the condition of the Mississippi River was this bad was back in 1988. At that time, a lot of barge traffic was stopped completely and the shipping industry lost approximately a billion dollars.
If a similar thing were to happen now, the consequences could potentially be far worse.
As I wrote about recently, a standstill along the Mississippi would cost the U.S. economy about 300 million dollars a day.
In fact, one towing company that works on the Mississippi says that it has already been losing about $500,000 a month since May.
In the end, who is going to pay for all of this?
You and I will.
In fact, this crisis could end up costing American consumers a whole lot of money….
So here’s the math. If you want to raise the average barge one inch above the water, you’ve got to take off 17-tons of cargo. To raise it a foot, you’re talking 200 tons.
And since, according to the American Waterways Operators, moving cargo by river is $11 a ton cheaper than by train or truck. The more that now has to be moved on land, well, the more the costs go up. Steven Barry says, “And, eventually, the consumer’s gonna pay that price somewhere along the line.”
And considering the fact that we are already facing a potential food crisis due to the drought, the last thing we need is for the Mississippi River to dry up.
So is there any hope on the horizon for the Mississippi?
Unfortunately, things do not look promising.
The fall and the winter are typically drier than the summer is along the Mississippi River. That means that conditions along the river could actually get even worse in the months ahead. The following is from a recent Time Magazine article….
But without significant rainfall, which isn’t in any long-range forecasts, things are likely to get worse. As summer turns to fall, the weather tends to get drier. Lower temperatures generally mean fewer thunderstorms and less rainfall.
“Take away the thunderstorm mechanism and you run into more serious problems,” says Alex Sosnowski, expert senior meteorologist for AccuWeather.com. And while droughts tend to be a temporary setback, longer-range forecasts are troublesome. Sosnowski says he is anticipating an El Niño weather pattern next year, which would mean below-normal snowfall and above-average temperatures.
Let us hope and pray that we don’t see another 12 months similar to the 12 months that we have just been through.
The U.S. economy is already in bad enough shape.
We don’t need any more major problems on top of what we are already dealing with.

National guardsman gave Florida Nazi group combat trainings to prepare for ‘race war’

A former US National Guardsman trained a white supremacist group on AK-47 assault rifle and fighting techniques, to help them prepare for an expected race war. The guardsman eventually became a white supremacist group member himself.
The Missouri guardsman, identified as Spc. Ryan Riley by the St. Louis-Post Dispatch, provided military training for the American Front, a “militia-styled, anti-Semitic, white supremacist, skinhead organization (that) is a known domestic terrorist organization,” according to court documents.
The 28-year-old Riley traveled to Florida and provided the racist group with military training in July 2011 using a pistol, an assault rifle and 200 rounds of ammo.
The leader of the white supremacist group, Marcus Faella, also provided 12 AK-47-style rifles for members of the group to use. After the training, the guardsman himself was initiated into the hate group.
Riley told court investigators that while serving the Army in Iraq in 2008, he “became interested in protecting the White race.”
Eleven members of the American Front were also arrested in May for planning acts of violence and preparing for “an inevitable race war.” They were subsequently charged with hate crimes, conspiracy and paramilitary training in furtherance of a civil disorder.
The guardsman is cooperating with authorities investigating his ties to the white supremacist group.
Investigators are looking into e-mail and text message correspondence Riley had with white supremacists, as well as looking at blog posts he wrote for skinhead websites.
The man also exchanged messages with the leader of the American Front, who wanted the guardsman to provide the group with firearms, survival and medical training.
Court documents show that Faella was also trying to make ricin, a highly poisonous powder that can kill a human with just a few grains of salt.
While Riley claims to have had second thoughts about his involvement with the white supremacist group after the weekend of military training, he continued to answer the group’s questions regarding the use of firearms. He also corresponded with the white supremacist groups Hammerskins, Volksfront and Blood & Honor.
The National Guardsman’s involvement with white supremacy groups is particularly alarming after a US Army veteran with ties to white supremacists killed six people in a shooting at a Sikh temple last week.
“Outside every major military installation, you will have at lease two or three active neo-Nazi organizations actively trying to recruit on-duty personnel,” a former white power skinhead in the US Marines told CNN.
The military is investigating extremist activity within its branches, which Riley and gunman Wade Michael Page have brought into the media spotlight.

One Moviegoer With a Gun Could Have Prevented 70 Innocent People From Being Shot

In light of the incident at the Dark Knight premier early this morning, it’s worth noting that we as a law abiding society could have prevented the deaths of, at last count, 13 people and the injuries sustained by scores of others.
Anti-gun fanatics will tell us that outlawing guns is the solution. In fact, before the smoke from the gunfire dissipated this morning special interests and politicians were already calling for more gun control. Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg has asked our Presidential candidates to directly address the issue:
No matter where you stand on the Second Amendment, no matter where you stand on guns, we have a right to hear from both of them, concretely, not just in generalities, specifically, what are they going to do about guns?
No doubt Mr. Bloomberg (and his merry band of government nitwits) would be ecstatic if both candidates supported a Constitutional Convention to eliminate the second amendment.
While Messers Obama and Romney will likely treat us to a host of platitudes regarding the issue, the fact of the matter is that prevention of such horrendous crimes falls not in the hands of the government, but of the people.
Take, for example, the recent actions of a Florida man who spotted two armed robbers enter the internet cafe that he was patronizing. He just so happened to be a card carrying member of the personal responsibility club and had his weapon strapped to his belt.
The two robbers burst through the doors of the Palms Internet Cafe in Ocala and ordered everyone to get down as they waved a handgun at dozens of customers.
But they didn’t expect Samuel Williams to pull out his own weapon and fire…

This guy kept poppin’. He didn’t stop. He just kept poppin’… I think he shot both of them.
Seconds counted; the police were minutes away; Mr. Williams, not knowing what the intentions of the armed robbers were, took action.
Lives were saved, the armed robbers were wounded (unfortunately), arrested and subsequently released on bail (because that’s how government “prevents” violent crime).
The other ‘preventative’ measure put forth by a government that wants to ensure they and they alone have the right to impose their will by way of the gun would be to strip the rest of us of our right to defend ourselves. In a few days they may do just that when President Obama and Secretary Clinton join the United Nations in their never ending battle to restrict private ownership.
But, as we’ve seen countless times – in the UK, Washington D.C., and most notably in Chicago, Illinois – when you ban guns, violent crimes (gun crimes in many cases!) actually increase. Crime has gotten so bad in Chicago that we can’t even call it crime anymore. As the police gang unit in the city described it, it’s a war zone not dissimilar to what soldiers see in Iraq and Afghanistan.
At the risk of beating a dead horse, we’ll repeat the adage that when private law abiding citizens are banned from owning guns and defending themselves, only criminals will have the guns. And they will use them to indiscriminately murder innocent men, women and children.
Mayor Bloomberg wants to know what we are going to do about guns?
How will we prevent another Dark Knight rampage, or Columbine massacre or Luby’s incident?
The answer is to allow American citizens to arm themselves. An armed society is a peaceful and respectful society.
And when you get that small percentage of people who truly have mental disorders, who don’t care about killing others or dying themselves, there is nothing – not a gun ban or a liberal group hug that’s going to stop them.
Such an action as was committed by the psychopath in a movie theater today can be dealt with in just one fashion: DEADLY FORCE.
The talking heads and politicians will analyze the gunman’s motives. Psychologist and doctors will explain to us how we need to find the troublesome people before they strike. Anti-gun advocates will cite statistics and organize protests.
Here’s the reality of it.
This is America. We have laws that allow Americans to own guns, so you’re just not going to get them off the streets. We can’t simply arrest people for pre-crime if we suspect them of having a mental condition, because as we know, the government now classifies millions of us as domestic terrorists and just plain nuts, so that option is akin to shipping us all off to re-education camps or worse.
There is only one way to lower the violent crime rate and put the power back into the hands of peaceful people who intend to live their lives to the fullest and in a manner consistent with the rule of law.
It’s simple, really.
One moviegoer with a gun could have prevented 70 innocent people from being shot today.
HUNDREDS IN FLASH MOB RANSACK FLORIDA WALMART

A huge house party broken up by police in a North Jacksonville subdivision didn’t end there Saturday night as hundreds of young partygoers ignited a flash mob at the Lem Turner Road Walmart Supercenter.
They caused havoc that was recorded and posted on YouTube until Tuesday afternoon, while one person reported being shot during the party.…
“The actions of these teenagers was deplorable and put at risk the safety of innocent bystanders, staff and customers,” [Walmart spokeswoman Dianna] Gee said. “We are committed to assisting law enforcement in any way we can to identify the people responsible for the commotion, including acts of vandalism and thefts at the store.”

Naked man, 22, ‘leaps from roof, dents truck and urinates on floor before biting chunk out of another man’s stomach’

A naked man allegedly flew into a violent rampage, biting a chunk out of another man’s stomach after leaping from his roof onto a truck and urinating inside his home.
Officers responding to the scene needed backup to restrain Jeremiah Aaron Haughee with leg shackles, a spit hood and handcuffs after he continued fighting despite being Tasered five times.
Authorities did not carry out tests on Haughee to see if he was under the influence of any drugs.
Police first arrived at the home in Flagler Beach, Florida at 4.30 a.m. to find two men restraining the naked 22-year-old in a puddle of urine and glass.

They said they had woken to someone destroying their garden furniture, before hearing the person climb on their roof. He jumped onto a truck and dented its hood, leaving $1,500 worth of damage.
When the two men came outside to find out what was going on, Haughee ran into the house and tackled them, knocking a picture frame to the floor and smashing it.

He then urinated on the floor before biting one of them in the stomach as they tried to restrain him, a report from the St. Augustine Police Department said.
Police said the bite was so severe that it will leave the victim permanently disfigured.

When two officers arrived, they handcuffed Haughee and tried to move him from the broken glass and urine, but he started kicking out at them.

When one officer returned to the patrol car to fetch leg shackles, Haughee tried to spit on and bite the other, First Coast News reported.
After being unable to restrain Haughee, the officers then attempted to Taser him.
He fell down after each five-second shock, only to get up and begin attacking them again, the report noted.
When three additional officers arrived on the scene, they still struggled to control the man and he bit one officer on the lower leg. He required medical treatment.
Police then put him in a spit hood and used a set of handcuffs to attach his leg shackles and handcuffs together.
He was taken to Flagler Hospital and given Ketamine, which calmed him down and put him to sleep.
He was booked into the St. Johns County jail on five counts of battery – three against a police officer – according to the arrest report. He was released on Sunday on $32,000 bail.
Scene: Haughee woke up the homeowners when he jumped from a roof onto their truck at 4.30 a.m.Police said Haughee is not being tested to see if was under the influence of illegal drugs as there is no statute for such a test.
But Haughee has been arrested in the past for possession of drug paraphernalia and for possession of marijuana.
He was also arrested in 2008, when he was 18, for resisting arrest following alleged petty theft.

In order for a society to function successfully, people need to be able to trust one another. Unfortunately, we are rapidly getting to the point where it is very difficult to trust anyone and society is breaking down.
Just think about it. Do you trust most politicians? Do you trust most lawyers? Do you trust most bankers? Do you trust the police? As you will read about below, even doctors are going absolutely bonkers these days. So if the “upper crust” of society cannot even be trusted, then what about everyone else? Sadly, the truth is that America has been overrun by psychos. Most people look somewhat “normal” when you meet them, but unfortunately very few people have pure motives these days. You never know when someone is going to stab you in the back (literally or figuratively). These days, most people simply do whatever is right in their own eyes, and that makes society a very unpredictable place. As the economy continues to fall apart in future years, people are going to become even more desperate, and that is going to cause all of this craziness to get even worse.
Almost everywhere you look, there are signs of societal decay. During an interview last year, trends researcher Gerald Celentemade the following statement….
“Society is breaking down on every level: socially, economically, politically and it’s not just the U.S. It’s worldwide.”
Sadly, he hit the nail right on the head. There is not a single segment of society that the rot of social decay has not touched. A lot of people want to put all of the blame on “the politicians” or “the bankers”, but the truth is that many of us are just as corrupt as they are. Instead of pointing fingers, many of us need to look in the mirror.
You might find some of the examples in the list below to be a bit humorous, but a very serious point is being made here.
America is being fundamentally changed, and not for the better.

#1 Cannibalism is alive and well in America apparently. Down in Miami the other day, police shot a man who was literally eating the face off of another man….
“The guy was, like, tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, ‘Get off!’” Vega said. “The guy just kept eating the other guy away, like, ripping his skin.”
Vega flagged down a Miami police officer, who he said repeatedly ordered the attacker to get off the victim. The attacker just picked his head up and growled at the officer, Vega said.
As the attack continued, Vega said the officer shot the attacker, who continued chewing the victim’s face. The officer fired again, killing the attacker.
It is being reported that the victim in this crime has lost about 75% of his face.
#2 Down in Florida recently, a crazed doctor spit a mouthful of blood on state troopers during a DUI arrest. It is quite frightening when even doctors are displaying this kind of psychotic behavior….
Bird had $40,000 in his pockets and another $14,000 — along with two handguns, some pills and a small vial of liquid — in his BMW, troopers said.
The crazed doc repeatedly smashed his head against a partition until blood began gushing down the front of his face.
“Hey! Blood, blood, blood, blood all over! Take me to the hospital! Take me to the hospital!” Bird raves in the video, as he uses his head to smear blood all over the car.
#3 A lot of people get on my case for picking on Detroit, but can you really blame me? So much bizarre material keeps coming out of the city. For example, just check out what recently happened to a 22-year-old pregnant woman….
A 22-year-old pregnant woman survived after being bound, driven to Detroit, set on fire and shot early Saturday morning.
The woman, who was nine-months pregnant, had returned from a movie with her boyfriend and dropped him off at his house in Warren when she was approached from behind, Warren police Sgt. Dave Geffert said.
The woman’s hands, feet and eyes were bound with duct tape. She was then forced into her car and driven to an unknown place in Detroit where she was doused with lighter fluid, set on fire and shot once in the upper back, he said.
#4 Even famous preachers get carjacked in Detroit. Just ask Pastor Marvin Winans….
Pastor Marvin Winans’ SUV remains missing as of Thursday morning and so do the men who punched, kicked and robbed the famous gospel singer.
Winans was pumping gas Wednesday afternoon at a Detroit Citgo station on the corner of Linwood and Davison when at least two men ambushed him.
#5 Would you like to have your lips stapled shut and then be tortured with a power tool? Well, that is exactly what happenedto one man in Utah recently.
#6 A 26-year-old high school teacher in Minnesota has been charged with sending naked photos of herself to the phone of a 17-year-old male student. Did she really expect to get away with that?
#7 For some teachers, one student simply is not enough. A 33-year-old art teacher in Arizona was recently charged with having sex with four of her male students.
#8 Many of our major cities are turning into war zones. According to WGN, a total of 25 people were shot in a single night in Chicago recently.
#9 These days, most people do not seem to care if you are pregnant. Up in Seattle, police tasered a pregnant woman three times after she refused to sign a ticket for a traffic violation.
#10 Down in Georgia, a police officer recently kicked a woman who was nine months pregnant directly in the stomach. His superiors in the local police department defended his actions.
#11 After reading how police are behaving these days it is hard to have much confidence in them. For example, just check out what one police officer is charged with doing in Philadelphia….
A Philadelphia cop was arrested over allegations that he abducted a 14-year-old girl, sexually assaulted her and made her watch him have sex with a prostitute.
Police found Anthony Dattilo, 36, at a motel in the Bensalem area of the city Wednesday while responding to a possible abduction, according to the Bucks County Courier Times.
Dattilo, a 12-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, is reportedly in custody at the Bucks County prison on $500,000 bail.
#12 The sexual abuse that happens to children in homes all over America each night is absolutely unspeakable. The following is one recent example from California….
A Superior Court judge sentenced a man to 40 years and 8 months to life in state prison Friday for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old female relative on Christmas Eve while family members slept in other rooms, calling his conduct “depraved.”Jorge Miguel Gallegos, 38, of Santa Ana, was convicted in April of six felony counts, including sexual assault, lewd acts on a child under 14, and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime.
#13 Everyone knew that sickos and perverts were going to flock to the TSA so that they could legally touch people, but this is ridiculous. It was recently discovered that a Catholic priest that left the ministry because of allegations of sexual abuse has been hired by the TSA and works as a supervisor at an airport in Philadelphia.
#14 One recent study found that 5.3 percent of all inmates in state prisons have had a sexual encounter with prison staff.
#15 Down in Arizona, authorities recently removed dozens of cats from the home of an elderly woman for the third time. This time, there were 64 cats living with her. In the past, authorities had discovered that the woman would make a “feline stew concoction” with any of the cats that ended up dying.
#16 You know that things are getting bad when people are stealing from ambulances….
Spotsylvania County emergency officials are working to secure drug compartments in ambulances following a recent string of thefts.
Since April, two thefts have occurred at one rescue station and a third at another station. Morphine and other drugs were taken from locked ambulance compartments.
#17 Flash mobs continue to rob convenience stores all over the country. The following is one recent example from Baltimore….
“They went in, they started going everywhere in the store, grabbing things and then they just run out. And I knew that they didn’t buy it because they just run out,” Kendra Mellerson said. “They ran that way and they ran that way. And the guy was trying to come out and stop them but they couldn’t because there was so many.”
After some kids ran away, a store manager blocked the door to keep the rest of the kids from leaving. But those kids got so mad that the door was blocked, they started punching the store manager.
“Yes, they really started hitting that guy and he couldn’t keep getting beat on so he eventually let them out. And then they just ran,” Mellerson said.
#18 It isn’t just people on the street that are behaving like psychos. In fact, a series of seven scientific studies has found that “upper class people” behave more unethically than “lower class people” do.
#19 As society is breaking down, more Americans than ever are taking pills to dull the pain. In fact, it is being reported that Americans take 80 percent of all the pain pills that are sold in the world each year. Sadly, many of these pain pills are extremely addictive and cause people to want to commit crimes so that they can finance their pain pill habits.

As a member of the Choom Gang, Barry Obama was known for starting a few pot-smoking trends. The first was called “TA,” short for “total absorption.” To place this in the physical and political context of another young man who would grow up to be president, TA was the antithesis of Bill Clinton’s claim that as a Rhodes scholar at Oxford he smoked dope but never inhaled.
According to Maraniss, Obama took his weed smoking very seriously….
Along with TA, Barry popularized the concept of “roof hits”: when they were chooming in the car all the windows had to be rolled up so no smoke blew out and went to waste; when the pot was gone, they tilted their heads back and sucked in the last bit of smoke from the ceiling.

If things continue along this path, what do you think is going to happen someday when our economy fails and millions upon millions of Americans are hungry and desperate?
These are still the good times. Even though our economy has declined somewhat, we are still experiencing rip-roaring prosperity.
So if this is how Americans will act when the leaves on the tree are green, what is going to happen when really hard times arrive?
That is something to think about.
